A grandparent who passed before you were born. A distant cousin you only knew by name. However it happened, someone you barely knew owned a property, and now their unpaid taxes have somehow landed on your doorstep in the form of a lawsuit. It feels almost absurd to be pulled into something over a person who was a near-stranger to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;re not imagining how strange that is, and you&#8217;re not alone in it. When a property owner dies and no one formally settles the estate, the property passes down through the family by law, often reaching relatives who had no idea they were connected to it. When the taxes go unpaid, the county tracks down whatever relatives it can identify and names them. That&#8217;s how someone ends up legally tied to a distant relative&#8217;s property they never knew about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news is that a distant connection is easy to sever. You don&#8217;t have to suddenly become the caretaker of some relative&#8217;s old property, learn its history, or get involved with branches of the family you&#8217;ve never met. You can simply sell the small interest that passed to you, and your name comes off the lawsuit. The faint family link that dragged you in is also what lets you step right back out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s exactly the kind of situation we handle. You hand off a property you never wanted from a relative you barely knew, we take on the taxes and the legal side, and you&#8217;re free of it.
