When a relative who received certain long-term-care Medicaid benefits passes away, families are sometimes surprised to learn the state may seek repayment from the estate. In Texas this is handled through the Medicaid Estate Recovery Program, often shortened to MERP, and it can affect the home or land the heirs expected to inherit.
