It feels like the end. But Texas, unlike some states, gives former owners a second chance through what&#8217;s called the right of redemption. It&#8217;s important to know it exists, and equally important to understand its limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Redemption means the former owner can reclaim the property after a tax sale by paying the buyer back, but it isn&#8217;t cheap and it isn&#8217;t unlimited. For a residence homestead or agricultural-use land, the owner generally has up to two years from when the buyer&#8217;s deed is recorded to redeem. Doing so requires repaying the amount the buyer paid, plus taxes, costs, and fees, along with a redemption premium of twenty-five percent if it&#8217;s redeemed in the first year, or fifty percent if it&#8217;s in the second year. For most other types of property, the window is much shorter, generally one hundred eighty days, with a premium of up to twenty-five percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So redemption is real, but it&#8217;s a costly clock to be racing. You&#8217;re buying the property back at a meaningful markup, and the time limits are firm. For an heir who was already struggling to cover the original taxes, finding the full redemption amount plus a premium within the window is often harder than the situation that caused the loss in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s why redemption is best understood as a last resort, not a plan. It&#8217;s far better to act before a sale ever happens, while you still simply own your share and can deal with it on ordinary terms. If a family property is heading toward a tax sale, an heir can talk with an attorney, address the taxes with the authority, or sell their interest beforehand. Selling your portion ahead of a sale lets you walk away with value in hand instead of gambling on an expensive, time-limited redemption later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A couple of questions we hear a lot:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>If my relative&#8217;s property was already sold, is it truly gone?<\/em> Not necessarily, if you&#8217;re within the redemption period, but reclaiming it means paying the buyer back plus a sizable premium within strict time limits. An attorney can tell you whether redemption is still possible and what it would cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Wouldn&#8217;t it be easier to just sell my share before any sale happens?<\/em> For most heirs, yes.
