The short version: the taxes are owed on the property, and responsibility for them falls on the owners, which after an inheritance usually means all the heirs together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a property passes to several heirs, each one typically owns an undivided share of the whole. The county sends one tax bill for the entire property, not a separate bill split neatly among the owners. So in practice, no single heir is automatically &#8220;the one&#8221; who pays, and that&#8217;s the problem. Each may assume someone else is handling it, or live too far away to deal with it, and the bill goes unpaid. Since the taxes are attached to the property, an unpaid balance becomes everyone&#8217;s problem, and can eventually pull all the named heirs into a lawsuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re tired of this ambiguity, or of carrying taxes other co-owners won&#8217;t help with, you have a clean option. You don&#8217;t have to keep covering a shared bill or wait for the family to sort out who pays. By selling your own share, the back taxes go with the property to the buyer, and your name comes off the lawsuit. You stop being responsible for taxes on a property you didn&#8217;t want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A couple of quick questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Is one heir responsible for the whole tax bill?<\/em> The county bills the property as a whole, so no single heir is automatically assigned the bill. Responsibility falls on the owners collectively, which is why these taxes often go unpaid when no one takes charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Can I stop being responsible for the taxes?<\/em> Yes.
