The thought of standing up in a courtroom is enough to make anyone anxious, so it’s a relief to know that being named in a property tax suit doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll ever set foot in court. It depends on how you choose to handle it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your goal is to keep the property and contest the case, then yes, responding to the lawsuit generally involves the court process, and many people in that position work with an attorney to navigate it. But if your goal is simply to be free of the property, there’s a path that avoids the courtroom entirely. By selling the share that passed to you, you remove your name from the lawsuit, which means you’re no longer a party to the case. You’re stepping out of it rather than fighting it, and that doesn’t require court appearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The signing for selling your share can usually be handled remotely, on your own schedule, with no hearings to attend.
