So this is a fair and important question, and the answer is reassuring: selling your inherited share should not cost you out of pocket. In fact, the whole point is that you walk away with money, not spend it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You shouldn&#8217;t be asked to pay upfront fees, cover an appraisal, or write any kind of check just to sell your share or receive your payment. A legitimate buyer structures the deal so the ordinary costs of the transaction don&#8217;t land on you. You also don&#8217;t have to pay the back taxes yourself, because the buyer takes those on as part of acquiring the property. Rather than spending money to escape someone else&#8217;s tax problem, you typically come out with cash in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s worth knowing the warning signs, too. Anyone who asks you to pay upfront fees to &#8220;release&#8221; your funds, or who can&#8217;t clearly explain how the costs are handled, is a red flag. With a trustworthy buyer, &#8220;no cost to you&#8221; is a straightforward description of who carries the expenses, the buyer, not you, the heir who was pulled into this without asking. Getting that confirmed in writing is always reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A couple of quick questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Will I have to pay anything upfront?<\/em> No. A legitimate buyer doesn&#8217;t ask you to pay fees to sell your share or to receive your money. Being asked for upfront payment to &#8220;release&#8221; funds is a warning sign to walk away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Do I have to pay the back taxes out of pocket?<\/em> No. The buyer takes on the back taxes as part of the purchase, so you don&#8217;t cover them yourself.
