For a lot of people, it’s not even about the property or the money. It’s the simple discomfort of having your name attached to a lawsuit at all. You’ve worked to keep your affairs clean and your name in good standing, and now there’s a court case with you listed in it, over something you had nothing to do with. It just doesn’t sit right, and you’d like your name clear of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That instinct to protect your good name is completely reasonable. It’s worth knowing that this kind of case, a delinquent property tax suit, is a civil matter focused on collecting taxes owed on a property, not a criminal case or a personal accusation against you. Being named is a consequence of being a relative of the former owner, not a reflection of anything you’ve done. Still, understanding that doesn’t necessarily make you any more comfortable having your name in it, and that’s fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
